Why BJJ

Why women start BJJ

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is one of the most practical and rewarding things you can learn. These are the reasons our members started — and why they kept coming back.

Real self-defence

BJJ teaches you to control and neutralise a larger, stronger opponent using technique and leverage — not strength. The skills you develop are practical and genuine.

Confidence through competence

Progress on the mat is tangible. As your technique improves, so does the way you carry yourself. The confidence that comes from knowing you can look after yourself is different from anything else.

Get fitter doing something you enjoy

BJJ is a full-body workout that builds strength, flexibility and endurance. Most people find they get fitter faster than with a gym routine because training is genuinely engaging.

Mental sharpness

BJJ demands focus. When you're working through a live grappling problem, everything else disappears. It's a reset button — you walk in with the weight of the day and walk out clear-headed.

A supportive community

The relationships formed on the mat are strong ones. Wave BJJ is a respectful, inclusive community. Whether you're in the women's class or the mixed sessions, you'll be welcomed properly.

Suitable for complete beginners

You don't need any martial arts background, any particular level of fitness, or any prior experience. The women's class at Wave BJJ is built for people who are starting from scratch.

Your first class

What to expect

It's normal to feel a little unsure before your first class. Here's exactly what will happen — no surprises.

01

No experience needed

You will be guided through everything from the beginning. There is no assumed knowledge — the women's class is structured specifically for those starting out.

02

You don't need to be fit first

BJJ gets you fit as you train. You don't need to prepare in advance. Show up as you are and the fitness will come naturally through consistent training.

03

Wear comfortable training clothes

Leggings and a fitted top are perfectly fine for your first session. You don't need a gi or any specialist kit to get started. We'll advise you on equipment if you decide to continue.

04

You'll be guided throughout

The class is structured and methodical. You'll learn warm-up movements, technique drills and controlled partner work at a pace that works for you. No one is thrown in at the deep end.

Mixed classes

The mixed classes are
welcoming too

The women's only Saturday class is the natural starting point, but the mixed classes at Wave BJJ are also extremely beginner-friendly and welcoming.

The mixed classes are coached by our instructors — who may be male or female depending on the session. What stays consistent is the culture: respectful, structured, and genuinely supportive of beginners. You won't feel out of place or overwhelmed.

Many women who start in the Saturday class go on to train in the mixed sessions throughout the week — and find it's a completely comfortable and enjoyable environment. It's a positive next step for anyone who wants to train more frequently and become part of the wider Wave BJJ community.

What our members say

Google Reviews · Wave BJJ

As a woman it can be a bit daunting joining a BJJ gym, but everyone at Wave has been really lovely and welcoming and it quickly feels comfortable. I really enjoy the women's only class on Saturdays and the relaxed atmosphere of the gym. Definitely worth coming down for a free trial sesh. Highly recommend.

Wave is a great BJJ gym with a very friendly atmosphere, high quality instruction and challenging rolls. Lorenzo is an excellent head coach, always willing to answer questions and help us delve further into the techniques we're training.

I came here as a visitor from Germany. Wave is very close to Stamford Brook tube station. It's a very good BJJ club where I've learned a lot in a few days. People there are very nice. There's no "you can't ask a higher belt to roll with you" attitude and no reckless behaviour on the mat. Fully recommend a visit!
