Getting Started
Do I need any experience to join?
No experience is needed whatsoever. We welcome complete beginners and are very experienced at helping new students from zero. Many of our best students started with no martial arts background at all.
What is the minimum age to join?
Children can join our Kids BJJ programme from age 5. Adults classes are open to anyone 16 and over. We have dedicated classes for both age groups.
What should I wear to my first class?
Comfortable athletic clothing such as shorts and a t-shirt or rash guard is perfect for your first class. Once you decide to continue, we'll advise you on getting a BJJ gi (uniform).
What do I need to bring?
A water bottle, a towel, and comfortable workout clothing. Clean feet are appreciated — flip flops to walk to the mat are ideal. That's all you need to start.
How do I book my first class?
All classes are booked online through our booking platform at momence.com. You'll find the full schedule and can reserve your spot in any class that suits you.
About BJJ
What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art and combat sport focused on ground fighting and submission holds. It teaches you to control and submit opponents using leverage and technique rather than strength, making it effective for people of all sizes.
Is BJJ good for self-defence?
BJJ is widely considered one of the most effective self-defence systems available. The ability to control and neutralise an opponent on the ground — which is where most real altercations end up — is an invaluable skill.
Is BJJ safe?
BJJ is a contact sport but is designed to be practised safely with training partners. Tapping out is immediately respected and proper etiquette is strictly observed. With good coaching and training partners who care about your wellbeing, it's safer than many other sports.
What is the belt system in BJJ?
BJJ has five adult belts: White, Blue, Purple, Brown and Black. Progression is based on skill, knowledge and time. The journey to black belt typically takes 8–15 years of consistent training.
What's the difference between Gi and No-Gi BJJ?
Gi BJJ is practised wearing the traditional kimono (gi) and uses the clothing as a tool for grips and submissions. No-Gi is practised in shorts and rash guard without the gi, typically with a faster, more wrestling-style approach. We offer both at Wave BJJ.
Classes & Training
How often should I train?
For beginners, 2–3 times per week is ideal. This allows time to learn and let the body adapt while building momentum. More experienced students often train 4–6 times per week.
What happens in a typical class?
Classes typically begin with a warm-up, followed by technique instruction (usually 2–3 techniques per class), drilling the techniques with a partner, and then live sparring (rolling) at the end. Most classes run 60–90 minutes.
Do I have to spar (roll)?
You are never forced to spar. As a beginner, you'll build up to live sparring gradually when you feel ready. Most students begin light positional sparring within their first few weeks.
Can I train if I have an injury?
Always consult a medical professional before training with an injury. In many cases, light drilling or specific positional work can be done while avoiding injured areas. Let your coach know and we'll accommodate you.
